Two Victims Named in the Providence Campus Shooting as Authorities Continue Search for Gunman.
The pair of scholars who lost their lives in the weekend's violent attack in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their shooter continued following the release by local law enforcement of the single suspect detained in connection in the case.
Honoring a Lost Student
Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which honored her memory at a ceremony on Sunday.
She served as the vice-presidency of Brown’s branch of the campus GOP group, the group said. The White House press secretary also shared condolences online, stating: “It's indescribable. Keeping in mind her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”
An International Student
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his first year of studies at the prestigious university, family members said.
His name was verified by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and aiding others,” his sister, Samira Umurzokova said in a online post.
What Happened
Nine more persons were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering department of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Officials stated late Sunday that a 24-year-old male arrested in a search at a lodging about around 27 kilometers from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last 24 hours or so.”
Public Fear
Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our community”.
The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a police source told the news agency.
Police that searched the inn recovered a pair of pistols and magazines when the person of interest was taken into custody, the news agency reported.
Condition of the Injured

The president of College Republicans, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “Ella was known for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a statement. “We extend our sincere condolences to his relatives, friends, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his bright future.”
