The Red Devils Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Signing for United

The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for Bayern and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major signing for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.

Reliable Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack

The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a major uplift to the team's forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Building Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.

Recent performances feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen additional business:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and technical ability allows her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
