The City of Seattle's Pride Celebrations Will Go Ahead for World Cup Despite Formal Protests by Iran and Egypt

Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city during next summer’s FIFA World Cup tournament will continue unabated, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised strong concerns about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations and External Festivities

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities outside the stadium. This coincides with the tournament group match featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, FIFA will permit Pride flags to be brought into the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, our role is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” said a committee representative.

Cultural Background of Objections

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it did not want to be linked to events that “directly contradict the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains full authority over match venues on matchdays. While it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture was an idea created to highlight Seattle’s proud history of advocating for equality.
  • An artistic competition has been commissioned to create images to commemorate the occasion.
  • Planners are committed to making sure every visitor feel welcome in the city during the tournament.

The Pacific Northwest is home to one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations from every competing country. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing everyone encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our region,” organizers concluded.
