Liverpool Vows Not to Alter Offensive Approach Despite Poor Run of Form, Insists Arne Slot
Liverpool's head coach has revealed that the Anfield decision-makers share his views regarding the recent downturn and he will not abandon their attacking style in pursuit of a turnaround. The manager conceded that six losses in seven matches was unacceptable ahead of the weekend fixture with Villa.
Pressure Mounting Amid Difficult Period
Liverpool's coach recognized the scrutiny was intense before his altered lineup were eliminated from the Carabao Cup against their Premier League rivals. However, he emphasized that this need to reverse the decline is not coming from the team's proprietors or executive leadership following a significant spending of almost £450m.
"They say similar things," remarked Slot, whose squad will encounter Los Blancos in the Champions League and visit Manchester City in the Premier League.
Player Depth Continues Unchallenged
Liverpool's manager thinks his team "have an unbelievable squad if they are completely available and fully prepared for the programme we are facing". He noted that the recent signings in footballers like Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who is probably unavailable again against Villa through fitness issues, had left the club "in such a good place for the short-term future and the distant prospects".
Integration Challenges
When questioned about why his team were struggling to integrate, he replied: "That's not particularly helpful. 'Why, why, why?' I offer insights and people say I'm making justifications. I can identify multiple factors why we are not winning as much or experiencing losses as we do but, as I say every time, there are inadequate reasons to have a performance streak as we had now."
- Even if I could identify numerous reasons
- Leading this club you must avoid losses
- The reality is six defeats in seven games
Backline Performance
Only Burnley (21) have faced more big chances from regular play this season than the Merseysiders (19). The first-place team, the North London club, have allowed just two. Yet Liverpool's coach rejects the defense has been too vulnerable and maintains there is no justification to compromise forward-thinking approach for a more pragmatic style after ten fixtures without a clean sheet.
"In my view we're not conceding a lot of chances so I don't see a reason to modify our philosophy totally but we must improve in not conceding goals," he said.
Specific Instances
"Versus the Red Devils, how many chances did we concede? Versus the German side when we were ahead by two goals, we hardly conceded a shot on target. In every match we have played so far we haven't allowed a numerous openings. Not at all. We do concede a slightly more than the previous campaign but that is related to us being trailing by a goal so you become more adventurous. But in general I don't believe that our issue is that we concede too many chances. Our problem is we are unable to finish the openings we produce."
