Jude Bellingham Must Drop the Petulance to Earn a Key Role In Manager Thomas Tuchel.
For Bellingham to wants to earn his place once again into England’s strongest starting eleven, the smart move to cut out the unnecessary reactions. The way he reacted when he saw that the substitute board was going up following a night of uneven play in Tirana fell short of expectations.
"I’d rather not make more out of it but I stick to my words 'behaviour is key' and consideration for the players who come in," Tuchel said. "Decisions are made and you need to comply as a player."
Bellingham has to learn. It was unnecessary for an outburst. Harry Kane had recently scored to make the Three Lions leading by two in a meaningless fixture, there were six minutes left and Bellingham, after a below-par performance, had just been booked for a foul on an opponent. This could scarcely be called a debatable decision. In fact it might have been reckless for the manager to leave Bellingham on because there was a risk Bellingham would make himself ineligible of the first match of the tournament by getting a second yellow card.
Drawing Attention Upon Himself
Yet Bellingham made himself the center of attention. No one could overlook the 22-year-old’s annoyance upon understanding that his replacement was ready for another player. His arms went up in exasperation and even though he exchanged a handshake while heading to the touchline it was clear that the manager was displeased.
This represents the hurdle for Bellingham. He praised Marcus Rashford for delivering the cross for Kane to score his second of the night, but the rest was self-defeating. It's not like complaining was going to change Tuchel’s mind. The German has stressed repeatedly honoring the team structure and the importance of acting professionally.
Under Scrutiny
Bellingham, left out of the team last month, has been under scrutiny since coming back to the fold in the current camp. Practically he was being assessed and his actions haven't benefited him with his response to being taken off as the national team rounded off a ideal group stage by seeing off a feisty challenge from the Albanian team.
Tactics and Formation
As a result it's unclear on how England perform optimally with Bellingham in the team. What we saw was not definitive. Some new ideas were tested from the manager early on. Under him, England have gained England organization and direction over the past few matches, building with a holding player, a central midfielder, a No 10 and dedicated wide players, but the approach changed versus Albania. The young defender was given his first cap, Adam Wharton started for the first time for England and the use of John Stones as a part-time midfielder gave a passing resemblance to Manchester City’s team that won three trophies.
Inconsistent Display
His performance was inconsistent. He set up a shot for Eze during the second half but often looked too desperate to impress. He made many hurried and errant passes. There was a needless bit of aggro with a rival player early on. England were ragged after halftime. An opportunity for Albania resulted from he lost the ball cheaply. The yellow card was shown after an opponent took the ball from Broja and brought down the attacker.
Substitutes Decide
In the end the squad's strength was decisive. Tuchel introduced Phil Foden, who seemed more comfortable to the spot that Bellingham had played during the first half, and the Arsenal winger. Eventually Saka whipped in a corner for Harry Kane to open the scoring. It was a reminder that corners and free-kicks are going to be vital at the World Cup.
Connection Remains
Nevertheless, Bellingham was the story. The quality of Rashford’s assist for Kane’s header was partly forgotten amid the drama of the substitution incident. After the final whistle, the focus was on Bellingham. The coach approached to his side and guided the Real Madrid midfielder to acknowledge the away supporters. Their connection is not damaged. The coach isn't ready to discard Bellingham yet. Yet whether he is willing to offer him centre stage is still uncertain.
