Last year, actor Jude Law stated he “didn’t fear any repercussions” for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. This production, however, may align too neatly with the mythologized image circulated by Russian state media that, domestically, it reads as a compliment instead of a critique.

The Manufactured Superhero

Over a long period, the Russian political apparatus and its entertainment industry have worked together to craft a tailor-made version of the president. This character is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reframed as a Russian James Bond who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series released last fall, helmed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional blue-eyed lieutenant colonel selected by fate to “rescue” Russia from chaos. While the character's name a different name, the message is clear: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this identical story rather than undercutting it. An adaptation inspired by a bestselling satirical novel aims to undermine the leader's mythology by presenting him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors around him.

The Myth of the Reluctant Leader

On screen, the president is shown as having been picked by influential figures to stabilise the nation because he is “a fit former intelligence agent”. The oligarchs approach him and all but beg him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the background, desiring enduring influence.

This narrative is the Kremlin’s export myth: the cool, reluctant strategist guided by fate. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to accept the role. The position was effectively a selection process with many contenders. Central to the selection stood a powerful businessman from the previous administration who expected to run the country de facto.

• The shortlist included several politicians, including an opposition leader later murdered and a former spy chief.
• According to an expert who studied Putin’s biography, the chosen candidate simply fitted the necessary criteria: loyal, from the security services, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A businessman close to the events said the primary requirement was controllability and loyalty, not leadership.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the notion of Putin as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and routine duties, a low-level clerk not involved with actual agent work.

Interestingly, the shift to depicting him as a “007” may in part have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as 007. The grittier version led Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with Putin. Edited images replacing Craig’s face with his appeared on city centers, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a Russian 007.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with Russian audiences, the Kremlin will not miss the opportunity to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of mass protests, the opposition, or key figures in the story, despite covering the past decade, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, Putin is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. His influence is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he finally acquires a recognizable face—one that may inadvertently echo the exact legends it might seek to examine.
